Co-Impact Sourcing promotes the use of energy efficient technologies and renewable energy technologies to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. doTERRA seeks to minimize the impact of waste streams on the environment, and encourages agricultural producers to minimize their environmental impacts. Priority is given to buying products made from raw materials that originate from sustainably managed sources, and bulk goods are dispatched by sea wherever possible to minimize carbon footprint.
If you find yourself counting sheep on a nightly basis, it may be high time that you consider some aromatherapy—there are countless studies that detail just how beneficial certain scents can be for getting quality shut-eye, even in highly stressful situations. For example, one study found that when ICU patients sniffed lavender, chamomile, and neroli, their anxiety levels dipped significantly, and their sleep quality did just the opposite. Another found that the scent of lavender increased slow-wave (deep) sleep, particularly in women. Just taking a whiff of any sleep-inducing oil before bed can help, but to reap the benefits all night long, consider keeping an open jar of an oil dilution on your nightstand or using a pillow spray.
Historically, Geranium has been used to promote clear skin, calm nerves, and improve mood. Smallholder farmers in both Madagascar and Kenya grow this unique variety of Geranium plants, which produce our target oil profile. Through contract farming with smallholder farmers, doTERRA is able to improve lives through this additional income stream for families, but also through HHF-funded social impact projects in these communities.
Aromatherapy is considered a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), part of a broad range of healing philosophies, approaches, and therapies that can be used to complement conventional treatments practiced by the mainstream medical community.(7) However, due to a lack of standardization in most cases, more clinical research is needed on the effects of essential oils on human health.
JA | Your gut is ground zero for when your health begins. Many people are treating conditions and symptoms and not addressing the root cause of their disease, which begin in the gut. For instance, I take care of many patients with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease, and in most cases the doctor or even nutritionist they see treats only their thyroid with medications or herbs.
Another well-researched essential oils benefit is their role in aiding and improving digestion. Some oils help to relieve upset stomach, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach spasms and even conditions of the gastrointestinal system, like IBS. Essential oils can also aid your digestion by helping to stimulate digestive enzymes that make it easier to break down and absorb the nutrients, fats and protein that you need.

The book begins with a wealth of easy to understand nutritional information - real food vs fake food. It offers simple substitutes to replace foods that are not good for our bodies. All this followed by delicious recipes for breakfast, beverages, salads, soups and stews, sauces and dressings (even ketchup), main dishes, side dishes, snacks and delicious desserts.

Citrus Essential Oils are often thought of for their light, summery aromas, but I love using citrus oils all year round. My use of the citrus oils increases during the colder months as I find them energizing and help to uplift the spirits. They are the perfect complement to blends that fight off the winter blues, "cabin fever" and depression. Read about the aromatic properties of each of the citrus essential oils.
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine in which healing effects are ascribed to the aromatic compounds in essential oils and other plant extracts. Aromatherapy may be useful to induce relaxation, but there is not sufficient evidence that essential oils can effectively treat any condition.[23] Essential oils should not be interpreted to be cures for chronic disease, or other illnesses, as scientific research does not support this.[24] Much of the research on the use of essential oils for health purposes has serious methodological errors. In a systemic review of 201 published studies on essential oils as alternative medicines, only 10 were found to be of acceptable methodological quality, and even these 10 were still weak in reference to scientific standards.[25] Use of essential oils may cause harm including allergic reactions and skin irritation; there has been at least one case of death.[26] As such, the use of essential oils as an alternative medicine should be approached with caution.
This is one of the most vital things you must know about essential oils: not all essential oils are created equal. In fact, most of them are worthless to your health and often synthetic. Therefore, when buying essential oils — whether 5ml, 10ml or 15ml bottles — be certain they are certified USDA organic, 100 percent pure, therapeutic grade and indigenously sourced.

By deliberately seeking to improve the social, economic, and environmental well-being of farmers, distillers, and producers of CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils, doTERRA ensures the continued supply and quality of essentials oils for generations to come while creating shared value with supply chain participants. doTERRA intentionally seeks out opportunities to partner with organizations that share this aim and recognizes the tremendous opportunity it has to make a significant impact on reducing extreme poverty through the ethical production of CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils.
According to a systemic review and meta-analysis published in Pain Research and Treatment, there is a significant positive effect of aromatherapy, compared to placebos or control treatments, in reducing pain. Researchers evaluated 12 studies on this topic and found that essential oils were especially helpful in treating postoperative pain, obstetrical pain and gynecological pain. (14)

In Kenya, our Cō-Impact Sourcing initiatives for Geranium and other aromatic plants include training smallholder farmers, providing critically important initial inputs, supporting cooperatives, and then the continued monitoring and evaluation of our initiatives through a third party program in partnership with the University of Oxford. In addition to donations from the dōTERRA Healing Hands Foundation, dōTERRA has established a Community Development Fund in Kenya. For every kilogram of essential oil produced by its farmer cooperatives, a portion of that revenue is set aside in a fund overseen by the cooperatives themselves to finance larger development projects at their discretion.

Early on, I had a functional medicine practice and wrote a weekly newsletter for my patients. I wrote an article about the top five ways to lower blood pressure and one of my patients said I should post it online. I thought it was a great idea, so eventually I started a web site and regularly posted health articles and content on it. Next, I wrote a cookbook, The Real Food Diet, and asked one of my mentors, natural health expert and pioneer Jordan Rubin, to write the forward for the book. At the time, I was gradually building a “content empire” with Axe Wellness while Jordan was the founder of Garden of Life and busy formulating products and working extensively with retailers. Several years later, Jordan sold the company and was contemplating his next venture. By then, I was interested in dietary supplements, so a mutual friend suggested that it would make a lot of sense for us to merge and start a new company. As co-founders of Ancient Nutrition, we’ve utilized our respective strengths to create a successful business model that is disrupting the Natural Products Industry.

Some essential oils have sedative properties, which can be helpful for people who are having trouble falling asleep or sleeping through the night. Lavender oil, in particular, is known to be an effective sleep aid because of its ability to leave you feeling relaxed and calm. Some other oils that can be used to promote restful sleep include Roman chamomile, ylang ylang, bergamot and vetiver.

In any form, using essential oils as green pesticides rather than synthetic pesticides has ecological benefits such as decreased residual actions.[30] In addition, increased use of essential oils as pest control could have not only ecological, but economical benefits as the essential oil market diversifies[29] and popularity increases among organic farmers and environmentally conscious consumers.[28]

Funny you should mention these Essential Oils. I was just on vacation and the young woman I was with was telling me about her homemade Hand Sanitizer. She was explaining how safe it was for her small children and what was in it, etc. Then she told me about her doTERRA Essential Oils that she had used. Well, you see…I have two friends who went to a seminar by doTERRA. One of those friends, some time in the past, told me about doTERRA oils and I bought the book from her. I’ve always wanted to start purchasing the oils. I have used oils from other ‘makers’ in the past. I like anything close to homeopathic. 🙂 And this is as close as one can get. So, I guess I may as well get hopping on this now. 🙂 Thanks for keeping us gals informed of the best products out there!
Do not take any oils internally and do not apply undiluted essential oils, absolutes, CO2s or other concentrated essences onto the skin without advanced essential oil knowledge or consultation from a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. If you are pregnant, epileptic, have liver damage, have cancer, or have any other medical problem, use oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. Use extreme caution when using oils with children. It is safest to consult a qualified aromatherapy practitioner before using oils with children. For in-depth information on oil safety issues, read Essential Oil Safety by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young.

Aromatherapy may be useful to induce relaxation, but there is not sufficient evidence that essential oils can effectively treat any condition.[3] Improper use of essential oils may cause harm including allergic reactions and skin irritation, and children may be particularly susceptible to the toxic effects of improper use.[4][5]

They're made from parts of certain plants like leaves, herbs, barks, and rinds. Makers use different methods to concentrate them into oils. You may add them to vegetable oils, creams, or bath gels. Or you might smell them, rub them on your skin, or put them in your bath. Some research shows that they can be helpful, if you know how to use them the right way. Always check the label and ask your doctor if you’re not sure if they’re OK for you to use.

doTERRA develops long-term partnerships with growers and distillers based on solidarity, trust, and mutual respect. doTERRA promotes the growth of its partners through long-term contracts that do not maximize profit at their expense, and facilitates predictable pricing for small scale producers to ensure consistent, growing demand. doTERRA finds appropriate, participatory ways to involve its partners in decision-making processes and ensures that communication channels are open at all levels of the supply chain.
A pilot study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice found that the use of aromatherapy as a complementary therapy helped to reduce anxiety and depression scales in postpartum women. Women between zero and 18 months postpartum were divided into either a treatment group that inhaled a blend of rose and lavender essential oils or a control group that didn’t receive any type of aromatherapy. After four weeks, the women using aromatherapy had significant improvements in anxiety and depression symptoms compared to those in the control group. (12)
Through dōTERRA’s Cō-Impact Sourcing efforts in Brazil, small-scale farmers in rural areas can earn an additional income stream during the off-season. This added income can be used to cover many of the production costs for the farms so that the income from the ripe red mandarin, most of which is sold to the fresh market, can be profit. Farmers receive a fair and transparent price for the fruit and the guaranteed income stream ensures that they are able to support their production.
While there are many ways to use essential oils, simply inhaling essential oils has been found to influence an individual’s mood, cognition, psychology, and physical wellbeing.(22) A study of 28 postpartum women who identify as having anxiety and depression underwent a four week treatment that involved inhaling a blend of rose and lavender essential oils twice a week. At the end of the study, the study found “significant improvement” in most of the women.(23) In another study that used film clips to induce anxiety, subjects that were exposed to lavender while watching the film had a measurable reduction in heart rate, galvanic skin response, and heart rate variation when compared to those that were given a placebo. This indicates a potential use for lavender when seeking immediate, temporary relief from anxiety.(24)
We've covered a lot about aiding mood and mentality, but what about the more physical healing benefits of essential oils? Many plants are natural antiseptics, anti-inflammatories, antimicrobials, and antivirals, so when concentrated into essential oil form, they can function as highly effective remedies for acne, muscle soreness, sore throats, and more. Take ever-versatile peppermint oil, for example. "It's cooling, and can be found in formulated muscle care products along with eucalyptus, wintergreen, and German chamomile essential oils to name a few," Avery says. Try her go-to recipe for a DIY leg rub: "Add 10 drops of peppermint essential oil to one ounce of sweet almond oil, and rub it into leg muscles and feet."
Co-Impact Sourcing supports and respects the right of all employees and producers to form and join cooperatives, to bargain collectively, and to maximize the benefits of collective organization. Such collective membership often enables members to obtain better pricing on agricultural inputs, better access to financial instruments, as well as access to collectively-owned harvesting and other equipment.
We stand behind the quality of our diffusers and will take back any unit that is no longer functional. Bring it into any location or connect with our Customer Experience team, and we will happily repair or exchange it — it’s our lifetime efficacy guarantee. In order to protect the environment and reduce waste, we do not accept returns on previously used functional units.
Studies have shown that essential oils effectively destroy several fungal, viral and bacterial pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Helicobacter pylori and Candida albicans infections. Because antibiotic resistance is becoming such a major threat in modern health care, using essential oils as a form of independent or combination therapy can help to fight bacterial infections in a safer and more natural way.  (4, 5)
Drops of essential oils are placed in a water-based solution, shaken, and sprayed into the air in order to deodorize a room or set a mood. An example might be spraying an aqueous solution of pine or citrus oils to enhance holiday feelings or a solution of peppermint oil to stimulate alertness. You might also want to use a solution of water and your favorite essential oil as a yoga mat cleaner. It is important to shake the bottle before spraying in order to spray the solution and not just water.
doTERRA seeks to reduce poverty through generating ethically responsible employment in essential oil production. By creating and sustaining jobs in rural and underdeveloped areas, doTERRA supports marginalized workers and small-scale producers in developing countries and seeks to enable them to move from income insecurity and poverty to economic self-sufficiency.
Perhaps one of the most well-known essential oils benefits is their ability to reduce stress and anxiety. Some essential oils have sedative properties and induce a calm, peaceful, uplifting and relaxed feeling. The best essential oils for anxiety and stress include lavender, Roman chamomile, bergamot, ylang ylang, orange, rose, frankincense and vetiver.

"In partnership with CHOICE Humanitarian, the dōTERRA Healing Hands has been a leading force in rebuilding some of the areas of Nepal hardest hit by the earthquakes, including distribution of emergency relief supplies immediately following the earthquakes, building of 200+ temporary homes, 45+ temporary classrooms, permanent homes, repair and new construction of Wintergreen oil distillation units for 20+ communities, repair of multiple existing schools and assembling of over 500 new desks," Stirling says.

Evaporative diffusers, also known as the fan style, use the movement of air across an absorbent pad or tray that holds the essential oils. Most units have a small housing and a fan with a speed setting. This simple design often makes them inexpensive to purchase and operate. Some are battery operated and designed for travel. Negatives include the cost of replacement pads that can make this type of diffuser more expensive in the long term.
Oftentimes, experienced essential oil farmers, harvesters, growers, and distillers in underdeveloped areas are paid unfairly or taken advantage of, limiting their ability to escape poverty. Co-Impact Sourcing provides the tools needed to help lift these families and communities out of poverty and promote economic development. doTERRA adheres to additional Sourcing Guiding Principles when working in developing nations.

I came to doTERRA after the sudden passing of my husband. What started as a way to help my sleeping habits made way for improving my skin, easing my chronic discomfort, and giving me the energy to be the best single-mom I could be for my son! I feel better at 35 than I ever did at 25, and now I have the tools I need to handle life's roller coasters.
Essential oils are most commonly either inhaled as a fine mist of vapor through aromatherapy, or diluted with water or carrier oil, such as almond oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil and applied directly to the skin.(5) Most essential oils, unless they are specifically food-grade quality, are not ingested. One way to use food-grade peppermint oil or lemon oil is to blend a few drops into a glass of water for potential internal support. Peppermint oil gives sparkling (carbonated) water a refreshing wintery flavor and may help support a calm stomach.

Researchers evaluated 12 studies on this topic and found that essential oils were especially helpful in treating postoperative pain, obstetrical pain and gynecological pain. (14)
Tissue diffusion is a simple alternative to enjoying essential oils without a diffuser. Place 3-4 drops of the essential oil on a tissue and leave it near a vent or door. When the air conditioner turns on, or someone walks by, the movement of air will help to spread the essential oil. Soak other disposable materials such as wood in the oils to get the same effect.
Although highly fragrant, concretes contain large quantities of non-fragrant waxes and resins. Often, another solvent, such as ethyl alcohol, is used to extract the fragrant oil from the concrete. The alcohol solution is chilled to −18 °C (0 °F) for more than 48 hours which causes the waxes and lipids to precipitate out. The precipitates are then filtered out and the ethanol is removed from the remaining solution by evaporation, vacuum purge, or both, leaving behind the absolute.
JA | Because so many of the things we are eating, consuming, and putting on our skin on a daily basis act as antibiotics and kill off the good bacteria (probiotics) in our guts. This then can lead to intestinal inflammation and leaky gut. So staying away from gluten, sugar, hydrogenated oils, and animal products that contain antibiotic residue are crucial. As is replacing the skincare, body-care, and cleaning products you use with gentle essential oils like lavender, peppermint, lemon, frankincense, geranium, tea-tree oil, and rosemary.
Later, in 1652, botanist Nicholas Culpeper, published The English Physician, a book about herbal remedies.(12) But it wasn’t until 1937 that René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist, coined the term “aromatherapy” when he published a book called Aromatherapie about the many uses of essential oils. His inspiration was a laboratory explosion years earlier, during which he burned his arm and plunged it into lavender oil – the closest liquid on hand – which helped to soothe and heal his skin.(13)

Although they may not be the perfect replacement for all synthetic pesticides, essential oils have prospects for crop or indoor plant protection, urban pest control,[31] and marketed insect repellants, such as bug spray. Certain essential oils have been shown in studies to be comparable, if not exceeding, in effectiveness to DEET, which is currently marketed as the most effective mosquito repellent. Although essential oils are effective as pesticides when first applied in uses such as mosquito repellent applied to the skin, it is only effective in the vapor stage. Since this stage is relatively short-lived, creams and polymer mixtures are used in order to elongate the vapor period of effective repellency.[27]
Some essential oils qualify as GRAS flavoring agents for use in foods, beverages, and confectioneries according to strict Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and flavorist standards.[48] Pharmacopoeia standards for medicinal oils should be heeded. Some oils can be toxic to some domestic animals, cats in particular.[49] The internal use of essential oils can pose hazards to pregnant women, as some can be abortifacients in dose 0.5–10 mL, and thus should not be used during pregnancy.[citation needed]
Exposure to essential oils may cause a contact dermatitis.[20][21][22] Essential oils can be aggressive toward rubbers and plastics, so care must be taken in choosing the correct handling equipment. Glass syringes are often used, but have coarse volumetric graduations. Chemistry syringes are ideal, as they resist essential oils, are long enough to enter deep vessels, and have fine graduations, facilitating quality control. Unlike traditional pipettes, which have difficulty handling viscous fluids, the chemistry syringe, also known as a positive displacement pipette, has a seal and piston arrangement which slides inside the pipette, wiping the essential oil off the pipette wall.
When the 4 p.m. slump strikes, reboot by sniffing an invigorating scent blend—or better yet, spritzing yourself with an oil-infused face mist. Take your pick of scents that can help you double down on the rest of the workday: One study shows that sniffing rosemary can increase memory by 75% while peppermint has also been associated with recall as well as sustained focus. Other research has shown that peppermint, basil, and helichrysum help with burnout and mental fatigue.

Don't stress: Relaxation is only a whiff away. While there are plenty of science-backed scents for finding calm (rose, sandalwood, lavender, frankincense, and orange among them), Avery points out that in the end, you do you: "Any aroma that speaks to you and brings about a sense of calm and relaxation can be beneficial." Our favorite trick for alleviating tension in 30 seconds flat? Massage an oil blend with calming scents into your temples, which are pressure points.

The potential danger of an essential oil is sometimes relative to its level or grade of purity, and sometimes related to the toxicity of specific chemical components of the oil. Many essential oils are designed exclusively for their aroma-therapeutic quality; these essential oils generally should not be applied directly to the skin in their undiluted or "neat" form. Some can cause severe irritation, provoke an allergic reaction and, over time, prove hepatotoxic.

Some favorites are Good to Great, The 4-Hour Workweek, Think and Grow Rich, and Scaling Up. I’d say The 4-Hour Workweek definitely impacted me, because I read it several years ago when I was in full-time practice. From reading the book, I learned how to work Monday through Friday until noon at my practice and then devote just four hours from 1–5 p.m. to my online business. During those four hours I wrote articles, worked on videos and built up brand awareness for two years until I was able to go full time with Axe Wellness.
In ancient China, the Huangdi Neijing, or The Yellow Emperor’s Book of Internal Medicine, recommends using essential oils to support health.(10) In ancient Greece and Rome, essential oils were used for baths, massages, and as perfume. Persia is often credited with being the first society to use distilled essential oils as early as 980 AD, a discovery standardized by practitioners of medieval Persian herbal medicine.(11)
Simple smells such as lavender, chamomile, and rosewater may help keep you calm. You can breathe in or rub diluted versions of these oils on your skin. Scientists think they work by sending chemical messages to parts of the brain that affect mood and emotion. Although these scents alone won’t take all your stress away, the aroma may help you relax.

In order to reach the highest levels of any MLM, you must recruit more people who are almost certain to achieve a lower rank than you. Thus, it isn't a matter of working harder to recruit or sell more product. The structure of the compensation plan requires that the vast majority of people earn almost nothing from an MLM because for every runaway winner, there must be many more people below them.

A 2014 systematic review conducted at the University of Minnesota evaluated 15 quantitative studies, including 11 randomized controlled trials that examined the effects of essential oils on sleep. Researchers found that a majority of the study findings suggest a positive effect of essential oils on sleep deprivation and disturbances. Lavender oil was the most frequently studied oil and of all evaluated studies, no adverse events were reported. (20)

The intervention group inhaled lavender oil for 15 days and researchers found that they showed significantly significant differences in their sleep quality compared to the control group that received no form of therapy. Researchers pointed out that lavender oil is a non-invasive, inexpensive and easily applicable intervention for hospital patients who are having trouble sleeping and experiencing anxiety. (21)

There are many popular, quality essential oils, including those that are Certified USDA Organic, therapeutic grade and 100% pure—with no fillers, bases or additives. For example, being Certified USDA Organic is important for some people because the organic certification can be traced back clear to the seed and plant. Every handler of the product must be certified as well. Additionally, no prohibited pesticides or other toxins are used for Certified USDA Organic products.

Most flowers contain too little volatile oil to undergo expression, but their chemical components are too delicate and easily denatured by the high heat used in steam distillation. Instead, a solvent such as hexane or supercritical carbon dioxide is used to extract the oils.[10] Extracts from hexane and other hydrophobic solvents are called concretes, which are a mixture of essential oil, waxes, resins, and other lipophilic (oil-soluble) plant material.

Balsam of Peru, an essential oil derived from the Myroxylon, is used in food and drink for flavoring, in perfumes and toiletries for fragrance, and in medicine and pharmaceutical items for healing properties.[33][unreliable source?] However, a number of national and international surveys have identified Balsam of Peru as being in the "top five" allergens most commonly causing patch test allergic reactions in people referred to dermatology clinics.[34][35][36]

In the U.S. and other Western countries, aromatherapy finally took off in the 1980s and 1990s as an interest in CAM, also called integrative medicine, began to grow. Today, it is a common practice used at home by mixing essential oils in a bath, or using a few drops in a tea light candle diffuser. It is also popular at spas and hospitals as a complementary and alternative option to conventional treatments.

The essential oil that you choose will depend on the purpose—do you want it to help elevate your mood or do you need something to treat a burn? There is no definitive list that specifies which essential oil is used to treat which health condition. For example, while the essential oils of lavender, chamomile, basil, Frankincense, are generally found to have a calming effect and may help with anxiety and bergamot and peppermint oil are stimulating and can help those with depression, this is somewhat individual. So you need to be proactive about doing research and talking with qualified aromatherapists or other individuals with training in using essential oils.
The American Journal of Essential Oils and Natural Products is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes articles related to the current trends of research on essential oils, aromatherapy, plant components, aroma science and other topics.(35) For more scientific information, visit the ESSential OIL DataBase (EssOilDB) from the National Institute of Plant Genome Research, an online resource providing updated profiles of plant essential oils and their volatile compounds, or visit HerbMed, an interactive, electronic herbal database, which also provides scientific data about the use of herbs for health.(36, 37)
After asking the patients to record their headache severity and associated symptoms every 30 minutes for a total of 2 hours, researchers found that the difference between the controls and treated patients was statistically significant. From 129 headache attacks in the treatment group, 92 responded entirely or partially to lavender. In the control group, 32 out of 68 headache attacks responded to the placebo. (19)

This is the picture that doTERRA and other MLMs don't want you to see. Nearly 86% of doTERRA advocates, by my estimation, reached a rank where the average advocate earned less than $1,000 per year. And by that, I actually mean "earned" less than $1,000 per year. These numbers are not comparable to income earned in a typical job where you trade your time for money.
Absolutely, it’s the quality of our products. We find and source the highest-quality ingredients throughout the world for our supplements and essential oils. In addition, the ancient health principles and formulations we follow have been practiced by many cultures for thousands of years, so we have adapted them for the modern world. For instance, we may start with an ancient Ayurvedic turmeric base and add a blend of spices and specially selected fats to boost absorption. Our aim is to always offer the most innovative, highest-quality products and be number one.
And a 2014 study involving 82 participants evaluated the effectiveness of aromatherapy for elderly people with chronic pain and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Researchers found that after four weeks of treatment with essential oils, there was a significant reduction in negative emotions, including feelings of anxiety, stress and depression, among the intervention group. (13)

Supercritical carbon dioxide is used as a solvent in supercritical fluid extraction. This method can avoid petrochemical residues in the product and the loss of some "top notes" when steam distillation is used. It does not yield an absolute directly. The supercritical carbon dioxide will extract both the waxes and the essential oils that make up the concrete. Subsequent processing with liquid carbon dioxide, achieved in the same extractor by merely lowering the extraction temperature, will separate the waxes from the essential oils. This lower temperature process prevents the decomposition and denaturing of compounds. When the extraction is complete, the pressure is reduced to ambient and the carbon dioxide reverts to a gas, leaving no residue.

Valentiner notes that effective impact measurement remains a challenge, but it is one that the company is addressing. "We are currently developing metrics for measurement of our Co-Impact Sourcing Guiding Principles in order to ensure that we can effectively measure progress and identify successful areas for replication or scaling up elsewhere, as well as areas for improvement.  We realize this is a challenge but are fully committed to impact assessment and reporting in order to help show how our Co-Impact Sourcing model is successful."
An essential oil is a concentrated, volatile, aromatic liquid that is obtained from the fruits, seeds, flowers, bark, stems, roots, leaves or other parts of a plant. There are estimated to be 10,000 aromatic plants (ie that contain essential oils) on Earth, and about 500 of these are processed commercially for essential oil extraction. These oils have been used for centuries for both their healing and aromatic benefits. Plant Therapy offers over 100 of these essential oils.

When Josh Axe, DNM, DC, CNS, saw the growth in his natural-medicine-focused practice after its founding in 2008, he realized there were a lot more people he could help. He now shares his knowledge on nutrition, fitness, essential oils, and more at DrAxe.com. He’s also the author of two books, including Eat Dirt, which makes the case for rebalancing our microbiota and reaffirms the importance of addressing the root causes of health problems.
There’s no wonder why, considering the high cost of healthcare bills and the side effects of conventional medications, adding essential oils to your personal medicine cabinet can make a world of difference. This is especially true because essential oils benefits are vast and their uses range from aromatherapy, household cleaning products, personal beauty care and natural medicine treatments.
A Wholesale Customer is someone who enjoys full wholesale pricing (25% off), their own account dashboard, and all the perks and free products possibilities that come with being a doTERRA member. However, a wholesale customer can NOT receive compensation or commissions for sharing doTERRA products with others. A Wellness Advocate has the same discount and perks as a wholesale customer. The difference is that a Wellness Advocate has the possibility of sharing oils with others and earning an income. One is not necessarily better than the other, it just depends on what you are interested in. If you are not sure, I suggest starting as a Wholesale Customer, as you can always upgrade (for FREE!) to a Wellness Advocate later.

The key to capturing the aromatic essence and therapeutic benefits of essential oils lies in our pristine extraction process. Our unique organic extraction processes provide the assurance that our oils are of the highest quality, purity and efficacy. We ensure each batch of our oils is subjected to rigorous testing to ensure standards are met for authenticity, purity, potency and efficacy.
Low temperature and low pressure play an important part of collecting the highest quality essential oil. When plant matter is placed into a chamber and steam is injected, the plant’s essential oil is released into the air. The steam and essential oil are carried out of the chamber and cooled. The oil and water are then allowed to separate for collection.

The short answer is no. There are a few oils (lavender, for instance) whose chemical composition let them be applied to skin without harmful effects, but most essential oils are too strong to apply directly. Always dilute with a carrier oil (like jojoba, coconut, or sesame) before applying to skin and remember that most citrus oils are photosensitive which means that exposure to the sun after applying them can lead to quicker and more intense sunburns.

Some essential massage oils may make their way into the placenta, an organ in your uterus that grows along with your baby and helps to nourish it. It’s not clear if this causes any problems, unless you take toxic amounts, but to be safe, it’s best to avoid certain oils if you’re pregnant. Those include wormwood, rue, oak moss, Lavandula stoechas, camphor, parsley seed, sage, and hyssop. Ask your doctor if you’re unsure.

Certain essential oils are safe to use during pregnancy, but care must be taken when selecting quality and brand.[51] Some essential oils may contain impurities and additives that may be harmful to pregnant women. Sensitivity to certain smells may cause pregnant women to have adverse side effects with essential oil use, such as headache, vertigo, and nausea. Pregnant women often report an abnormal sensitivity to smells and taste,[52] and essential oils can cause irritation and nausea when ingested. Always consult a doctor before use.

Essential oils are highly concentrated fragrant essences extracted from herbs, flowers, fruits, and other plants that give them their unique aromas.(1) They are commonly used in perfume, food flavoring, medicine, massage therapy, and aromatherapy to support a general feeling of well-being.(2) Essential oils also “have a potential curative potential on the body, mind and spirit.”(3)

In addition to the wholesale membership option, doTERRA has a number of ways to get oils for reduced prices, or even for free! I highly, highly recommend the Loyalty Rewards Program-- this is a free, optional program, but when combined with your wholesale membership, can give you up to 55% back on every oil you purchase. In the 6+ years I've been with doTERRA, I've redeemed over $4000 in FREE oils from using this program! doTERRA also offers various promotions throughout the year and gives away free oils and products with qualifying orders.
doTERRA builds the capacity of farmers, distillers, and producers of essential oils. Increased capacity leads to increased incomes for supply chain partners through improvements in farming techniques, increased yields, improved process efficiencies, and strengthens productivity of the supply-chain ecosystem as a whole. doTERRA supports initiatives, typically through local NGO partners, that build capacity and deliver greater profitability through harvesting and storage services, technology improvements, logistics enhancements, provision of farm inputs, and agricultural training.
Most common essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, tea tree oil, patchouli, and eucalyptus are distilled. Raw plant material, consisting of the flowers, leaves, wood, bark, roots, seeds, or peel, is put into an alembic (distillation apparatus) over water. As the water is heated, the steam passes through the plant material, vaporizing the volatile compounds. The vapors flow through a coil, where they condense back to liquid, which is then collected in the receiving vessel.

Taken at face value, the doTERRA income disclosure statement paints a rather rosy picture where even its lowest-earning advocates (Silver rank) are pocketing more than $27,500 per year, the equivalent to about $13.75 per hour for a full-time worker. Roughly 1 in 6 sellers, based on the table, achieve a rank in which the average earnings top $100,000 per year.
Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation, often by using steam. Other processes include expression, solvent extraction, sfumatura, absolute oil extraction, resin tapping, wax embedding, and cold pressing. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other products, for flavoring food and drink, and for adding scents to incense and household cleaning products.

Aromatherapy: Through the practice of aromatherapy, essential oils are diluted in water and released into the air using a diffuser. Breathing in essential oil molecules may stimulate parts of your brain that influence physical, emotional, and mental health. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, for example, some scientists believe that inhaling lavender essential oil may affect brain cells in a similar manner to some mild sedatives, while other researchers believe these molecules may interact with hormones or enzymes in the blood.(6)
Research has shown that essential oils have potential as a natural pesticide. In case studies, certain oils have been shown to have a variety of deterring effects on pests, specifically insects and select arthropods.[27] These effects may include repelling, inhibiting digestion, stunting growth,[28] decreasing rate of reproduction, or death of pests that consume the oil. However, the molecules within the oils that cause these effects are normally non-toxic for mammals. These specific actions of the molecules allow for widespread use of these green pesticides without harmful effects to anything other than pests.[29] Essential oils that have been investigated include rose, lemon grass, lavender, thyme, peppermint, and eucalyptus.[30]
Essential oils are responsible for the fragrances you smell. They’re also the nutritional compounds inside many plants and herbs. And once extracted from the plant or herb, they bring many of the same health-giving benefits to the table. One reason they’re so powerful is because they’re the “essence” of the real plant or herb, only in a highly concentrated form. In fact, one small, 15mL bottle of lemon essential oil can contain up to 45 lemons!

There is some concern about pesticide residues in essential oils, particularly those used therapeutically. For this reason, many practitioners of aromatherapy buy organically produced oils. Not only are pesticides present in trace quantities, but also the oils themselves are used in tiny quantities and usually in high dilutions. Where there is a concern about pesticide residues in food essential oils, such as mint or orange oils, the proper criterion is not solely whether the material is organically produced, but whether it meets the government standards based on actual analysis of its pesticide content.[50]

A heat diffuser uses a heating element, such as a coil or candle, to speed up the conversion of the liquid oils into a gaseous state. These diffusers are often more decorative, less expensive, and contain few complex or expensive parts. Additionally, a heat diffuser can more quickly disperse the oils into the air. The disadvantage of heat diffusers is high temperatures that may degrade the quality of the oils.
As for blemishes and other skin irritations, there are plenty of options as well. Tea tree oil is an editor-loved remedy for shriveling up zits in a matter of hours, especially since it's one of the only essential oils (along with lavender) that can safely be applied directly to skin. Dab a few drops on a blemish to zap bacteria and soothe any redness. Got angry, inflammed skin from a sunburn, rosacea, or other sensitivities? Mist on some rosewater or a lavender hydrosol for instant relief.

WELLNESS ADVOCATE OPTION: Exact same as Wholesale Customer, but if there's even a tiny possibility of you sharing the oils with your friends, choose the Wellness Advocate option. There are many essential oils that can be applied topically or used aromatically to reduce body aches and pains. One study that displays this essential oil benefit evaluated the efficacy of essential oils on neck pain. For the study, the experimental group received a cream that was composed of marjoram, black pepper, lavender and peppermint essential oils, and the control group used an unscented cream. The creams were applied for 4 weeks, directly to the painful area after bathing. Researchers found that the experimental group had improved pain tolerance in the neck and showed significant improvement in the 10 motion areas that were measured. (15)
Most eucalyptus oil on the market is produced from the leaves of Eucalyptus globulus. Steam-distilled eucalyptus oil is used throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America and South America as a primary cleaning/disinfecting agent added to soaped mop and countertop cleaning solutions; it also possesses insect and limited vermin control properties.[38] Note, however, there are hundreds of species of eucalyptus, and perhaps some dozens are used to various extents as sources of essential oils. Not only do the products of different species differ greatly in characteristics and effects, but also the products of the very same tree can vary grossly.[39]

This may be important because according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, an estimated 40 million American adults suffer from anxiety disorders.(21) While consulting a doctor to seek to address the causes of mental challenges, using essential oils is sometimes seen as an alternative or supportive therapy. For those looking to essential oils for additional support, the following oils may provide optimal support.

Using essential oils in your skin, hair and beauty products is a natural and effective way to keep up your personal care regimes without having to use products that are made with chemicals and hydrogenated oils. Essential oils can calm irritated skin, reduce signs of aging, like age spots, improve acne, protect your skin from sun damage and thicken your hair.

Used the right way, they can help you feel better with few side effects. For example, you may feel less nauseated from chemotherapy cancer treatment if you breathe in ginger vapors. You may be able to fight certain bacterial or fungal infections, including the dangerous MRSA bacteria, with tea tree oil. In one study, tea tree oil was as effective as a prescription antifungal cream in easing symptoms of a fungal foot infection.
If you pass through the natural health aisles of your local grocery store, you’re likely to see small glass bottles of curious liquids with poignant aromas that could fill a room. Scents like lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree oil and orange line the shelves next to oil blends with promising labels like Anxiety Release, Detoxification Aide, Energize, Immune Support, Meditative Mood, and more. While some modern shoppers may be speculative of these products, ancient homemade versions of these single note essential oils and essential oil blends have been used for nearly 6,000 years for everything from traditional medical practices to spiritual rituals.

With these beadlets you get all the benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil (affiliate link) in a convenient little dissolving beadlet.
An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile (easily evaporated at normal temperatures) aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetherolea, or simply as the oil of the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. An essential oil is "essential" in the sense that it contains the "essence of" the plant's fragrance—the characteristic fragrance of the plant from which it is derived.[1] The term essential used here does not mean indispensable as with the terms essential amino acid or essential fatty acid which are so called since they are nutritionally required by a given living organism.[2] In contrast to fatty oils, essential oils typically evaporate completely without leaving a stain or residue.
Essential oils help to reduce toxicity by promoting the detoxification of your home and body. These days, we are all inhaling and ingesting a number of chemicals and environmental toxins that can be dangerous for our health. Some essential oils work as mild diuretics, thereby increasing urine production and improving detoxification. And some oils aid digestion, which also promotes the detoxification of toxins that buildup in the body. (18)

Cumin oil, which is safe to use in your food, can cause blisters if you put it on your skin.  Citrus oils that are safe in your food may be bad for your skin, especially if you go out into the sun. And the opposite is true, too. Eucalyptus or sage oil may soothe you if you rub it on your skin or breathe it in. But swallowing them could can cause a serious complication, like a seizure.
There are also quite a few studies that have found essential oils to be helpful for hair growth. One such study, conducted in 2015, evaluated the efficacy of rosemary oil on patients with androgenetic alopecia, or male or female pattern baldness. Patients were randomly assigned to rosemary oil or minoxidil (a medication commonly used for hair loss) for a six-month treatment period. Researchers found that both groups experienced a significant increase in hair count at the six-month endpoint. They also indicated that scalp itching was more frequent in the minoxidil group. (17)

Drops of essential oil are added to a natural carrier oil and applied to skin areas with gentle rubbing. As noted earlier, massage blends should not exceed 1% concentration of essential oils (one drop in a teaspoon) for adults. For children, concentration should not exceed 0.25% for infants, 0.5% for toddlers age 6 months to 2 years, and 1% for children 2 years and older. The choice of essential oils for massage depends on the desired effect.

doTERRA builds the capacity of farmers, distillers, and producers of essential oils.
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, essential oils are highly concentrated and contain active ingredients. For instance, it takes 220 lbs of lavender flowers to make 1 lb of lavender essential oil. Depending on their use, most essential oils should be diluted first before use. Diluting essential oils helps spread the aromatic, concentrated molecules over a larger area, making it easier and more comfortable for the body to absorb.

Many essential oils are said to support a normal mood and behavior, including feelings of anxiety. Studies back up these claims, with some research noting that essential oils may act as an “anxiety reducer, mood stabilizer, sedative, pain reliever, anticonvulsive, and neuroprotector.”(20) Thanks to a modern understanding of the brain, researchers can use neuroimaging to identify that essential oil can, in fact, change the way that the brain functions.

According to a review published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, “at least 90 essential oils can be identified as being recommended for dermatological use, with at least 1,500 combinations.” What gives essential oils their skin benefits is their ability to fight against pathogens that are responsible for dermatological infections. Essential oils can also help to improve inflammatory skin conditions, like dermatitis, eczema and lupus, improve the general appearance of your skin and even aid wound healing. (16)
For wound care, an ideal essential oil would be gentle to the skin and antimicrobial. Some essential oils can be used in different ways. For example, true lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) can be used on the skin for cuts and minor burns, and it can be inhaled to promote relaxation and sleep. Lavender is one of the few essential oils that can be used undiluted on small areas of the skin.

"Consumers are demanding to know traceability for their products and we believe that a key part of international development is and will continue to be carried out by businesses that see the value and the return on investment for social impact programs linked to the sourcing or manufacturing of their products from developing countries," she concludes.

Another useful essential oil for digestion is peppermint. Research shows that peppermint oil works to provide rapid relief of IBS symptoms. In a 4-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 72 patients with IBS received either peppermint oil or placebo. The peppermint group experienced a 40 percent reduction in total IBS symptoms after 4 weeks, which was superior to the 24 percent decrease of symptoms reported by the patients in the placebo group. After just 24 hours of using peppermint oil, the treatment group experienced a decrease in symptoms of 19.6 percent. (8)

Drops of essential oil are added to a bowl of steaming water, which quickly vaporizes the oil. Place a towel over your head and over the bowl of water with essential oil drop(s) and breathe deeply. This method is very direct and potent—the use of more than 1-2 drops may be overwhelming. It is important keep the eyes closed when using this method. The use of eucalyptus essential oil in this way can feel helpful with upper respiratory and sinus infections Note: This is not recommended for children younger than 7 years old. Children older than 7 can use swimming goggles to protect their eyes.
doTERRA seeks to reduce poverty through generating ethically responsible employment in essential oil production. By creating and sustaining jobs in rural and underdeveloped areas, doTERRA supports marginalized workers and small-scale producers in developing countries and seeks to enable them to move from income insecurity and poverty to economic self-sufficiency.

The essential oil information provided on AromaWeb is intended for educational purposes only. The references to safety information, constituents and percentages is generalized information.

Essential oils are placed in this device, sometimes with water (be sure to read the directions), and sometimes with heat so they evaporate. This is a good way to add the scent of an essential oil to a room, for example to add lavendar if you want to enhance relaxation in a yoga session or class. Essential oils should never be directly burned as the chemical structure is dramatically changed with incineration (Buckle, 2003).
